3rd January: BHAG Day

As one year ends & another starts, sometimes it can be all too daunting to look ahead …

In front the Sun climbs slow, how slowly

But in Rambling with Ric’s blogs, it always pays to look to the West … …

But Westward, look, the land is bright

Rye Harbour at dawn

By long-established * tradition 3rd January is BHAG Day.

*  OK; I started it this year !!

I’ve long been a believer in BHAGs …

A udacious

The term was coined by Jim Collins and Jerry Porras in Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies.

Their idea was that the BHAG provides one clear purpose and vision that you & everyone on your team is on board with.

If anyone is ever unclear which direction to head towards, or if a decision is beneficial for the company, they only need to ask, “is this getting us closer to our BHAG?”

The BHAG gets you out of thinking too small. Ironically, setting a goal that is big and audacious, also creates a sense of urgency.

So, what makes a good BHAG ?

From my experience, it needs to be explicit as to what it is and around 80% achievable.

“A goal should scare you a little and excite you a lot.”

Joe Vitale

As always, Mandiba himself explains it better than I ever could:

---

As I stand on the edge of this New Year, 2022 is a Big Year for me:

45 – 65 – 70

No … it’s not my Bank Sort Code !

45 years

… As a Qualified Accountant

65 seasons

… … Supporting Sussex cricket

70 years

… … … Old

More on the 45 & on the 65 as the year progresses.

For today, it is time to focus on the 70 ...

As the years tick by increasingly quickly, I often think back to those Sunday afternoon walks with my cousin Pat, when visiting my maternal Grandma.

Pat & I always paused to look at the clock on St Mary’s Church in Rye, East Sussex.

Begun in 1515, the clock's construction was only completed 45 years later in 1560. Needing to be wound twice a day, it is the only clock in England - and possibly in the world - with its pendulum swinging through the roof into the body of the church.

Whenever I visit Rye, I look - as I have done these last 60+ years – at the text on above the clock.

It is impossible not to believe that – for all of us – we are a shadow that passeth away.

And what of my own BHAG for 2022 ?

The Old retain their wits quite well so long as they exercise them

On Old Age by Cicero

7 Million Steps at 70

It’s going to require around 19,200 steps a day, some 3,435 miles in the year.

Perhaps some 3 hours walking each day, every day.

I really do hope that you’ll come Out Rambling with me during 2022.

After all ….

Why read a Rambling with Ric blog, when you can star in your own

See you soon!!

Ric

PS

So, that just leaves Your BHAG … …

I’d really love to know:

What is it ?

And during 2022 … How are you getting on ?

And always remember:

Start by doing what's necessary; then do what's possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.

A Top Tale of Shameless Self-Promotion

Each day, Every day ...

... Mylo & I are out and about on our daily walks.

In truth; the days do tend to rather blur into each other.

But at a couple of minutes before 4 o'clock on the afternoon of the 362nd day of 2021 ...

... well, Some Moments are Never to be Forgotten.

So … Just what was it that happened ?

Please enjoy:

A Top Tale of Shameless Self-Promotion

Editor’s Warning: Can any of this even possibly be true ??!!

Let's Be Honest ... ...

We are all Over-Target, High Achievers, aren't we ??!!

Towards the end of 2020 the CEO set the Target for 2021:

  • Walk 100 Marathons
    • 2,622 Miles
    • 5.342 million steps; some 14,640 Steps per Day

It looked a particularly daunting target ... not least for an Ol' Boy like me, who is now well into his Retirement Years.

But by late September - & perhaps rather to the CEO's surprise, never mind mine  - I had reached the Target.

St Cuthbert's Way:  Journey's End at Holy Island

It was time for …  the Q3 Re-Forecast.

The New Target was set at 7.3 million steps.

The Holy Grail: 20,000 Steps per Day

Now, as you may have realised; this is A Top Tale of Shameless Self-Promotion.

So, of course - at a couple of minutes before 4 o'clock on the afternoon of the 362nd day of 2021 - with 3 days to spare I met the New Target !!!

#NeverInDoubt

Thanks to all of you who came Out Rambling with me in 2021.
